Art Carpet Co., located at 11 SE First Street in Washington, is a long-running locally owned business.

Co-owner Lou Jones explained the business started back in the 1940s under Art Gill, for which the business is named.

When Jones’ husband Mike was in high school, he worked for Art Carpet.

In 1974, the Jones’ purchased the business and have since run the establishment.

“My husband’s been here since he was in high school. So, he started in the 60s and then our installer Bill Devine has been with us since ‘74 when we bought the place,” she explained about their experience in the flooring industry.

Jones stressed the one item that makes Art Carpet stand out is their employees.

“Our installers are probably the best and friendliest in town. We are always getting compliments on our installation,” Jones said.

Art Carpet offers a variety of flooring necessities, ranging from carpets to luxury vinyl.

“If you want a hard surface or a soft surface, we’ve got them all,” Jones said.

Carpet materials are made by Shaw, Mohawk and Bayou. Laminate flooring is made by Berry and Tarkett. Jones noted Art Carpet also has the new luxury vinyl tiles through Tarkett.

Other materials include resilient flooring through Nafco or Tarkett and hardwood through Bruce or Shaw.

Jones said Art Carpet is no stranger to the undecided carpet customer considering it took her two years to decide on a carpet change herself.

“We try to give them idea, see what they need. If they’ve got a lot of kids, they will need something a little more high traffic. If they are looking for a bedroom, then they may want something really plush and rich,” Jones explained.
