U.S. Schools Start Cracking Down on Unhealthy Snacks in Vending Machines

February 1, 2013 7:59 PM

Candy bars are out and granola and dried fruit are in under a new U.S. nutrition plan for vending machines at schools across the country.

A new proposal from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will force schools to severely limit unhealthy items like candy bars and sodas that are sold separately from federal school meals.

The snacks in vending machines will not be allowed to have more than 200 calories and must follow other nutrition criteria.

The new proposal comes after the government revamped nutrition standards for school lunches and breakfasts about a year ago in an effort to crack down on childhood obesity.
