“Top Gun” Hits IMAX Theaters In 3D Today

(Undated) — “Top Gun” fans have a chance to catch all of the movie’s aerial action in a way they’ve never seen before.

The classic fighter pilot drama — which helped catapult the careers of Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Kelly McGillis Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer — hits IMAX theaters in 3D today for a special six day showing. “Top Gun” captivated audiences when it was first released in May 1986, opening at number one at the box office.

The Tony Scott film went on to gross more than 353-million dollars worldwide.

Nominated for four Academy Awards in 1987, “Top Gun” picked up one Oscar for Best Music, Original Song for “Take My Breath Away.” Performed by “Berlin,” the song also went on to win a Golden Globe and helped the “Top Gun” Soundtrack reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The film’s other hit single “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins was also wildly successful, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Loggins also performed “Playing With the Boys” for the film. Cheap Trick, Teena Marie, Lover Boy and Marietta also appear on the soundtrack.

“Top Gun’s” incredible success also gave the U.S. Navy a boost. After the film’s release enlistment in the Navy increased 500 percent. Catch the six day re-release of “Top Gun: An IMAX 3D Experience” at IMAX theaters nationwide, starting today. A “Top Gun” Blu-ray 3D home video will be available on February 19th.
