The South Knox Spartans were victorious in the home opener over the White River Valley Wolverines by the final score of 12 to 7 runs on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Spartan Field at South Knox High School in Verne, Ind.
The Wolverines were first the first to score one run in the first and made it a very tense game for the Spartans. In the bottom of the third the Spartans bats sprang to life and the wheels fell off the Wolverines pitching. The Spartans would earn four walks in the third and drive home eight runs. The Wolverines started a small rally of their own by putting three across the plate in the fourth and sit the Spartans down in order. One run for the Wolverines in the fifth and again scoreless for the Spartans, as the Wolverines creeped towards the Spartan lead of eight runs to the Wolverines five to start the sixth inning. The Wolverines would leave one man on and score no runs with only one hit as the Spartans plated four more to extend the lead to twelve runs to try and finish off a half inning for the win. As fatigue set in, starting pitcher, Jeremy Carpenter, who threw 114 pitches and sixty-five strikes, allowed two Wolverine runs to score. The Spartans with a fresh pitcher and only one out left had the game in their grasp.
The Wolverines would finish the night with seven runs off of five hits and two errors. The Spartans came away with twelve runs, ten hits and three errors.
The difference makers for the Spartans this evening were Tyler Jones and Ty Barmes who both went two for four at the plate, recording two runs, and Jones with four RBI’s and Barmes with three. Chad Thompson had two at bats with one hit and one run. Thompson also earned a base on balls and after a wild pitch and a passed ball put him in scoring position at third only to be driven home, along with Isaiah Eveland, on a huge double to left field by Barmes to put the Spartans ahead by one. Carpenter, in addition to his outstanding pitching performance, also had four at bats with two hits and two RBI’s.
