John Henry Briner, 86, of Newport Beach, California, formerly of Knox County

John Henry Briner, 86, passes away March 6, 2014 in Newport Beach, California.  He was born in November 2, 1927 in Knox County to William Cleveland and Lucinda Irene (Junkins) Briner.  John married Opal Marian Briner who passed away October 26, 2008 in San Pedro, CA May 10,1953, Together now after a short time apart may they both rest in peace.

Surviving are his children, John Henry Jr. (wife Debbie), Lloyd William (wife Donna), Brian Keith (wife Shirley) , Bruce Kelly, Denise Eileen (husband Charles “Chuck” Spillman); his sisters, Leola Vantlin and Mildred Slater of Vincennes, Indiana; a sister-in-law Claire Gettman of RPV, Ca.; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard Daniel Briner (passed September 11, 2007 and his wife Susan (passed Nov 12, 2005);brothers, Lloyd William Briner, Jimmy Robertson and sisters, Virginia Allmon, Ruby Robertson, and a brother-in-law William (Billy, Kelly) Gettman.
He served in the United States Maritime Service from June 5, 1944 to June 8, 1946. he was discharged from the United States Coast Guard August 15, 1945 and enlisted in the United States Navy from August 1946 tntil his retirement in August 1968 and served during WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Wars. John retired form State of California 1988.

He was a lifetime Member of American Legion Post 73 Vincennes, Indiana, and a member of Veterans Foreign Wars (VFW), George E. Smith POST NO. 7142 San Clemente, CA 92673

Graveside services with military honors will be conducted on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Fairview Cemetery in Vincennes with Rev. Ray Tromley officiating. A reception will be at the VFW in Vincennes afterwards. Online condolences may be made at www.goodwinfamilyfh.com
