The annual Montgomery Turkey Trot Festival is expected to draw in large crowds during the four day event scheduled for Sept. 4 to 7.

The long running event has become a community favorite, according to Festival Public Relations Albert Kavanaugh, but one of the biggest draws has been the country music performer that takes the stage.

This year, up-and-coming country musician Frankie Ballard will be taking the stage Friday, Sept. 5 at 8:15 p.m. on the stage in Montgomery Ruritan Park. Ballard is known for the song “Sunshine and Whiskey” often heard on the radio.

“As the four day event is primarily an outdoor event, year in and year out, it’s the country music headline entertainers, along with favorable weather, that seems to determine just how big the crowds will be – regardless, it is a community tradition now in its 43rd year,” Kavanaugh said.

In addtion, Aaron Tipton will be taking the stage Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Tipton performed during the event last year as well.

The Turkey Trot started in 1972 by the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce as a final summer bash and a way to bring some attention to the small town of Montgomery. Since its inception, the crowds of up to 30,000 individuals has proven successful.

“The Montgomery Turkey Trot Festival has been a big part in keeping the town of Montgomery in the conversation,” Kavanaugh said.

The event’s namesake stems from the Turkey Trot races that take place each year during the event. This year, the first turkey races will begin Thursday at 6 p.m. at the track. A back story on the event states the original organizers found the mascot for the event fitting because more than one million turkeys are raised in Daviess County on an annual basis. In the 1970s, the producer was Armour &Co., which is now operated by Perdue Farms.

Other events through the week will include a nightly carnival, flea market and the championship Turkey Trot race on Sunday.

There will be a 5K run on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Turkey Trot Grounds.
