(Vatican City) – Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina is the new Pope. The announcement was greeted by thunderous cheers from tens of thousands of people packed into St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Bergoglio was elected today after receiving two-thirds of the vote in the papal conclave.

Pope Francis delivered his first public prayers as leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Francis greeted tens of thousands of people packed in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City to see the new Pope. His first prayer was to the former Pope Benedict, who resigned weeks ago due to health reasons. After speaking the Lord’s Prayer, Francis called for a spirit of brotherhood among the followers of the church.
