Shaker’s Landing Antiques in Vincennes offers a wide variety of antique items and services.

The business is owned by Larry and Joyce Phegley and is located at 1238 S. 18th St. at the intersection of 18th and Willow Streets.

“Well, three-fourths of the building is Larry and I’s things, and we do have some quality dealers that are in here,” Joyce said.

She noted items range from the Victorian Era to modern primitives, and include items such as military, coal mining and primitives.

Larry said they have recently added some new items in an area outside the building.

“We’ve got a new area outside – a fenced in area – that has doors, windows and mantles,” Larry said.

The business acquires items through several means.

“A lot of times people bring things to us. We get phone calls everyday where people have things they want us to look at and they bring them to the door,” Larry explained.

He added they also do handle small estates, but have handled large estates in the past.

“We’ve done some large estates, although that’s a lot of work. We worked on one for four months almost every day once. The guy was a hoarder and we found a lot of things, but it was a lot of work,” Larry said.

In addition to antique items, Shaker’s Landing has a custom frame shop.

“Anything that is special to someone, we pretty much can frame it,” she said.

Items they have framed in the past include memorabilia, prints, original oils, watercolors and have even done shadowboxes.

Larry can restore old frames. Joyce explained he is an artist, which provides him with the ability to restore the intricate designs.

They also restore furniture, which Larry noted also gives him the freedom to explore his artistic side. In addition to the restoration, Larry makes custom furniture.

There is a wall of Larry’s art work in the building as well. It depicts local landmarks, which they said often brings out a nostalgia in observers.

“Larry is an artist and he is getting to be quite well known around the area. He does a lot of historic drawings and things people remember from around the area,” Joyce said.

Larry added, “Both of us are interested in history and I incorporate that love of history into my artwork.”
