Bridge 8 closed early due to public safety

(Vincennes, Indiana) — The Knox County Board of Commissioners has issued an emergency closure of Bridge #8 over Kelso Creek on Washington Avenue in Vincennes.
During the meeting, County Highway Superintendent Ron Cardinal stated the bridge has been deemed unfit to carry reasonable loads and will be closed until further notice.
The Bridge located on Washington Ave has been in a deteriorating state for sometime. About a year ago, the commissioners put a 6 ton weight limit on the bridge. In the meantime, the commissioners went through the process of deciding to bring a new bridge in and they went with a precast unit, so they could keep it open as long as possible.
President Larry Holscher stated, “About a month ago, we thought it was deteriorating a little faster than it had been. We were hoping to hold off until the (August) 18th, and Ron finally looked at it earlier in the week and he said they needed to close it.”
“It’s come to the point for public safety, we just need to close it,” Holscher stated after the meeting.
County Highway Superintendent Ron Cardinal closed the bridge immediately following the meeting. The closure begins at Niblack Blvd and continues to Belle Crossing, the road will be open to local traffic only.
Notice to Proceed was issued to Milestone Contractors, L. P. on July 9, 2014 for the Washington Ave. Bridge #8 Project. Milestone has 135 days to complete the project. It is anticipated to open in mid-November.
